Notarization and Commissioning

Paralegals licensed under the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) by virtue of their office, are appointed as Notary Publics and Commissioners of Oaths and Affidavits. Paralegals may notarize documents and administer legal oaths, affirmations, and declarations. As well as attest letters of invitation or travel consent letters in accordance with the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act and the Notaries Act.

Documents that are sworn or affirmed in front of a Notary Public have the same validity as making a statement under Oath. The Notary Public is only witnessing the signing of the document and does not have personal knowledge of the information of the document being commissioned.

Swear an Oath or Make an Affirmation:

You can either swear an oath or make an affirmation, swearing an oath relates the truth of the statement to a religious belief and an affirmation is a non-religious statement. Both have equal power and force under the law.

Notarization and Commissioning Process:

  1. Book an appointment;
  2. Bring your unsigned documents and government-issued IDs to your appointment;
  3. We will administer the Oath or Affirmation and commission your document.
We offer virtual and in-person appointments in our office. Certified true copies and signature witnesses need in-person appointments. Only affidavits and statutory declarations can be done online.

Please bring the original copies of your document with two pieces of ID. You must show proper identification to prove your identity prior to taking the oath or declaration.
